Writers Tears is produced by the Walsh Distillery in Carlow, Ireland. Family owned and run they were established in 1999 and are dedicated to playing a part in the revival of Irish whiskey as one of the world’s most appreciated spirits. In 2018 they produced Irish whiskies first cask strength whiskey of the modern era. They have also built the largest manually operated distillery in Ireland, uniquely distilling all 3 styles of Irish whiskey under one roof.
Pure pot still whiskey is a type of whiskey traditionally made from a mixture of malted and unmalted barley distilled in a pot still. It is unique to Ireland. This style of Whiskey became known as the Champagne of Irish Whiskey and the much sought after liquid was a favourite with Irish writers through the 19th and 20th century.
This whiskey was produced by blending single pot still whiskey and single malt Irish whiskey which had initially been matured in ex-bourbon casks before being finished for 12 months in Hogshead barrels that previously held Florio, Sicilian Marsala wine. Expect earthy notes, with fried fruits and candied ginger. Bottled at 45% abv without chillfiltering.
Nose: The Marsala wine is very evident, tropical fruits of pineapple and guava, toffee apples and nut praline.
Taste: More toffee apples, toasted and caramelised chopped nuts, Christmas spices of cinnamon and all spice. Creamed honey and red grape juice.
Finish: Pineapples and mango, some honey sweetness.
