The Willett Distillery or Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (KBD) was established in 1935 and still remain a family owned and operated company. They have established them self as big players in the industry creating brand like Kentucky Vintage, Johnny drum, Rohan’s Creek and Noah’s Mill. We think of this distillery as a bit of a Signatory Vintage or Cadenhead of American Bourbon.
The family purchase young whisky and then mature the spirit their own way and over a period of time they say is perfect for the liquid in the barrel. This helps them produce whisky, Bourbon and Rye of superior quality which is full of incredible flavour.
The Willett family have decided to distill spirit them self (sounding more like Edradour and Signatory now as a comparison). Using three stills, a column still, a ‘doubler’ and a pot still they have created their very own 3 years old Rye whisky and 4 years old bourbon. Obviously small batch and very limited. They are very quickly starting to become collectors items so keep your eyes peeled for more Willet whiskies, Bourbon and Rye and you might find a bargain that will turn into a great investment or a night at home drinking exceptionally great whisky.
This Rye has been created using 70% rye, malted barley and corn. Charred barrels are used for maturation and the end product has no colouring or chill-filtration.
Nose: New leather shoes with oak and spice but comes together really well. Some pickling there too with dark chocolate.
Taste: Dill pickle, star anise and cinnamon, wonderful spice and creamy vanilla.
Finish: Sweet and spicy with peppermint freshness.
