The Starward Distillery has grown incredibly since its birth at Essendon Fields and now sits as an icon of Melbourne, Australia’s food capital.

With a focus on flavour over age the whisky produced here is matured in red wine barrels mainly. All produce is sourced from Australia and usually only a days drive away, so it’s local. It only takes Starward whisky around three years to hit its optimum flavour profile and this is created by using the local climate to their advantage.

Owner and founder David Vitale is food obsessed and wanted to create memorable moments around the dinner table and we have no hesitation that he has managed to produce this vision.

The Tawny #1 was a limited release and sold out in record time. The #1 was voted the Best Worldwide Whisky at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition in 2020. Like Tawny #1, this whisky was fully matured in Tawny fortified wine casks (both fresh and charred). The Starward distillers then threw in some puncheon and hogshead barrels for fun, which allowed them to showcase the vibrant tropical notes of the  Starward spirit.

This whisky is described as ‘Christmas in a Glass’.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: Dried dark fruits of plum, fig and dates mingle with raisins and orange peel with the balance of toasted oak.

Palate: The dried dark fruits carry through to the palate with dark caramel, nutmeg spice and dark chocolate.

Finish: Medium to long with drying oak and beautifully balanced spice.
