Tomintoul distillery is built in the highest village in the highlands of Scotland and can sometimes be very hard to access due to the road being blocked with snow and ice in the winter. However hard it is to get here the storage facilities at Tomintoul are huge and boast a warehouse that can accomodate ten million litres of malt within the grounds. The water source is the local Ballantruan Spring and with this water they produce about 3,000,000 litres of spirit annually. The current owners are Angus Dundee plc and the distillery has four stills to produce the spirit. This spirit is mainly used and a very valuable contribution to Whyte and MacKay’s blends.
Ballantruan comes from the old settlement on the west side of the Tomintoul Distillery. It was first released into the core range in 2005 and was followed by a 10 years old and then a 15 years old.
Old Ballantruan is distilled using heavily-peated malted barley in the traditional manner. After ‘sleeping’ for many years in hand-picked oak barrels, this whisky has been bottled at 50% abv and without chill-filtration in order to retain its layered and integrated peaty flavours.
Nose: Good quality vanilla fudge, hot chocolate, smoked heather, peppermint and malt.
Palate: Toasted barley, vanilla fudge, earthy peat, toasted hazelnuts, citrus and boiled sweeties.
Finish: Balanced oak with smokey embers and boiled sweeties.
