This peatier, double stilled expression of Springbank (named Longrow) is matured for about 8 years in ex-bourbon American oak casks then it spends another three years in casks which were previously used for storing red wine. In this case a Pinot Noir red wine from Red Valli Vineyard in New Zealand. Now these were refill Pinot barrels and we suspect that it was the barrels used in the 2015 launch of the whisky with the same name.
The whisky again is a collectors item and the usual trend tends to be remembered, one to keep, one to drink and one to share although the later is very difficult with a whisky of this nature.
Nose: The red berries associated with the pinot barrels are very evident and balance well with stone fruits and smoke. A deliciously mouthwatering experience of sea spray and waxiness.
Palate: Certainly plenty of sweetness to this whisky which comes through in a jam like texture. Strawberries and cherries perhaps even a little raspberry. There’s then hints of nuttiness and a wee bit of Sherry.
Finish: Combining smoke with raisins, red fruits and a creamy rich texture just delivers perfection.
