James Eadie Ltd was founded by Rupert Patrick in 2016. Rupert is James Eadie’s great-great-grandson, who has held positions at Diageo, Beam and Ian Macleod Distillers. James Eadie founded a brewery in Burton-on-Trent in 1854, the same year he developed the Trade Mark X Scotch blend. The blend was extremely popular and was sold to Eadie’s chain of public houses throughout the 19th century. In 1933 James’s business was sold to Bass who continued producing the blend till 1947. The resurrection of the blend along with the structuring of the independent bottling company by Rupert means that James Eadie can be remembered again and his past work can be enjoyed once more. The James Eadie Independent bottling’s consist of cask strength selections from various Scottish distilleries. Each bottle describes the distillery, the abv and the date of distillation and bottling as well as the maturation technique.
The Linkwood Distillery was established in 1821, but only started production in 1824. Owner Peter Brown was the manager of the Linkwood Estate and wisely kept his nose clean until the 1823 Excise Act was on the stature book. The distillery was rebuilt in 1874 and was run as an independent distillery up until 1932 where is joined DCL, now Diageo. It has remained in production ever since, with regular upgrades taking place, most significantly in 1972 when a new distillery was built opposite the old buildings. The owners ran both distilleries until 1985 when the original distillery was used as an experimental site. The capacity of the distillery is now around 5.5 million litres per annum.
This single malt whisky was distilled at the Linkwood distillery on the 4th of November 2009 before being placed in Re-Charred Ex-Bourbon Hogsheads and left to mature for about 10 years. In 2020 it was bottled at 46% abv as part of the James Eadie Independent bottling ‘Small Batch’ range. Only1159 bottles were produced.
Nose: Fresh pineapple and orange juice, glaced cherries and jaffas. With a tangy burnished copper character.
Palate: There’s a great amount of barley richness going on with a chewy caramel and custard set of flavours.
Finish: We’re left with tea biscuit flavours on the palate, gentle baking spices and lime zest. An easy drinker with heaps of character.
