The Knockando distillery was founded by the Knockando-Glenlivet Distillery Company in 1898 and opened it’s doors in 1900 but was then closed only two years later. It then reopened in 1904. Knockando is Gaelic for ‘little black hill’ and this distillery was the first in Speyside to use electricity for lighting. The distillery also had its own Railway station on the line that ran east from Grantown-on-spey. Something unique about this distillery is that it states both the year of distillation and the date of bottling on its bottles. This is great for the distillers to vary the time of maturation and they do not need to go far to have it bottled as the bottling facility is in the distillery. Knockando is currently owned by Diageo which was purchased in 1997 when Grand Met merged with Guinness. The distilleries source of water comes from Cardnach Spring and the distillery produces 1,300,000 litres of whisky annually. Only about 13,000 litres is used to make single malt the rest being used in blended varieties. Knockando distillery is situated in Aberlour a small town in Banffshire, 27 kilometres west of Keith.
This distillery boasts hints of nuts leading to a fruity creaminess with lingering toffee.
Nose: There is hazelnut, pears, straw and dried spices.
Palate: This whisky has a light palate, hazelnut coats the mouth with chocolate and pear.
Finish: An easy to drink whisky but very clean and a short dry finish.
