The newest addition to the range of whiskies produced at Springbank, Hazelburn gains it’s light, delicate character through being distilled three times in the distillery’s old copper stills. 1997 saw the first distillation of Hazelburn and the first release of the whisky as an eight year old in 2005 was so successful that all 6,000 bottles sold out within a matter of weeks. Hazelburn is made with un-peated barley, making the spirit light, fruity and very, very subtle. Like Longrow, Hazelburn is named after one of the old Campbeltown distilleries. Most of the distillery buildings are still standing, though the distillery is long defunct.
With Single Malt whisky growing ever popular worldwide this means looking for a spirit that sticks out amongst the crowd. Hazelburn is a triple distilled Campbeltown spirit which is generally matured in ex bourbon barrels. It is one of the three styles that Springbank offer in their range and this one is triple distilled and unpeated. An unusual creation in the Scottish whisky marketplace and so this makes a new bottling very intriguing. Bottled at 46% abv and unchill-filtered.
Nose: Creamy caramel and fresh honey, crunchy apples and poached pears with a touch of vanilla bean.
Palate: Violet crumble, stewed apples and again poached pears. The vanilla combines everything gracefully. The creamy quality is in the form of chocolate fudge and there’s a little oak.
Finish: Lots of milk chocolate and very long finish. A satisfying Single malt whisky which should be enjoyed at the start of an evening or after work.
