The anticipation of a new private edition released yearly is always exciting but we’re never to know what to expect. It’s not often I sit down at a table and a whisky takes me by surprise, in a good way.
Dr Bill Lumsden has this year created a whisky which describes Glenmorangie to me, plenty of fruit, vanilla and citrus. Don’t be fooled or even think for a minute you could just settle with an Glenmorangie original. This whisky hits the mark, it’s on another level, it has created a level of its own.
It’s first distilled in the tallest stills in Scotland producing light vapours only worthy of the finest casks. It is then matured in the best of ex-bourbon american oak barrels a spirit could ever wish for, slowly maturing and developing structure and finesse. When the spirit is just right it is extra matured in casks baked under the sun that were once filled with Malmsey madeira wine. This is whisky created from innovation, passion and creativity. It is a whisky you must try.
Nose: Fruity ripe fresh apricots, vanilla bonbons, orange peel, lemon oil, milk chocolate and sultanas. Add a few drops of water and the nose opens up gracing us with marmalade and balsamic vinegar notes.
Taste: Baked stone fruits, stewed oranges and apricots. Long waves of vanilla and more orange marmalade. Add a few drops of water and the whisky exposes minty eclairs, chocolate orange, sugared almonds and honeydew melon.
Finish: The finish is long and delightful, creamy on the palate like toffee or fudge. Caramelised oranges and lemons. Mint chocolate chip and pear drops.
