Scotch Whisky is known the world-over by the brand names of large blending companies. These blends are the mixture of the products of various distilleries which were originally independent family owned units. Until the middle of the 20th century there were many small firms that bottled and sold the pure product of the local distilleries. Since Victorian times the firm of William Cadenhead has provided this service. However a diminution of public interest caused many of the small bottling companies to close down. Only a small handful of distilleries still remain in the ownership of their founding families and even fewer of the bottling companies remain active, William Cadenhead is one of the notable survivors.

Founded in 1896 the Tamdhu Distillery was created by a group of assemblers who were looking to engage in their own whisky production. Situated in Knockando, Banffshire, Scotland the distilleries name comes from the Gaelic for little dark hill. The distillery operated for many years before being closed between 1927 and 1947. Boasting 3 wash stills and 3 spirits stills the distillery produces around 4 million litres of pure alcohol per year, this is not a small distillery.  Owned and operated by Ian MacLeod Distillers it is primarily used for producing blended whisky such as Famous Grouse, J & B and Cutty Sark. The majority of its single malt now being sold by independent bottlers and more recognisable as being matured in European oak ex sherry casks.

This single malt from Tamdhu was distilled in 1991, before being matured in bourbon hogsheads until bottling in 2014.
