The Bowmore Distillery was founded in 1779 and is positioned on the beautiful rugged shores of Loch Indaal in the town of Bowmore. The distillery is owned by the new partnership of Beam Suntory and produces over 2 million litres of spirit each year. This Islay distillery, still to this day, retains the traditional floor method of malting barley allowing the distillery to offer a very unique product. Nowadays most distilleries use more modern efficient methods to malt barley using mechanical equipment with expert ‘maltsters’. Bowmore single malt is loved all over the world due to a very special peaty salty flavour is has on the palate. The whiskies they produce are of great charm and perhaps not as well noticed as some other whiskies on the island but they have plenty of peat smoke and a refreshing finish. Did you know? The Bowmore Distillery converted one of its warehouses into the villages swimming pool. They used the waste heat from the distillery to warm the waters, this allowed for a very pleasant swim.
“Mackillop’s Choice” is a range of specially selected Single Malt Scotch Whiskies drawn from individual casks. Founded in 1996 by Angus Dundee Distillers (owner of the Glencadam and Tomintoul distilleries). It is named after Lorne Mackillop. Lorne Mackillop is the heir to the chief of the Mackillop Clan, which was all but wiped out by the English in the aftermath of the battle of Culloden in 1745 during the Jabobite Rebellion.
Lorne selects the casks that are bottled in the Mackillop’s Choice range. It is a range of specially selected single malt Scotch whiskies drawn from individual casks, and are bottled at either 43% or 46% alcohol, but more predominantly at their natural cask strength, without chill-filtering or the addition of any caramel colouring, which helps preserve the malts natural characteristics of aroma and taste.
This Bowmore was distilled on the 17th of September 1992 and has spent no less than 25 years in an ex-Bourbon cask. Bottled in September 2017 with an outturn of only 288 bottles. It was bottled at 50.7% ABV and boasts no colouring or chill-filtering. It is a wonderful classic Bowmore which are getting harder to find these days.
Nose: Chestnuts toasting on a Scottish beach on a winters night, wafts of salty sea air, creamy vanilla mingling with peat smoke, freshly cooked biscuits smothered in dark chocolate.
Palate: Salted caramel meets dark chocolate, peat smoke meets fresh vanilla pods, balanced out by cinnamon, clove and white pepper and a wonderful integration of oak.
Finish: A superb whisky, a memorable experience. It’s long and warming, there’s spice from the oak and lingering peat smoke, orange peel and white pepper.
