Released in 2021 the Coire Leis is the newest expression by Ben Nevis Distillery (9/5/2022). Named after the water source for the distillery, a small loch that runs down the slopes of Scotland’s highest mountain named Ben Nevis. Designed as an entry level single malt with an age statement of around 8 to 10 years and fully matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks an bottled at 46% ABV.
Ben Nevis Distillery is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. The distillery is nestled at the foot of Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, which has a summit elevation of 4’406 feet above sea level giving its malt a renowned name ‘the dew of Ben Nevis’ . This imposing mountain provides an impressive background to a traditional Scottish craft. The distillery was founded by ‘Long John’ Macdonald (no he was not a pirate) in 1825 and in 1848 in a cunning way of promotion presented a cask to Queen Victoria when she visited Fort William. They produce both malt and grain whiskies simultaneously due to installation in 1955 of a special still.
Nose: Orange oils, lemon zest, Manuka honey, creamy vanilla, buttered digestive biscuits, charred oak and wood spice.
Palate: Tarte Tartin, creamy caramel, baked apple, orange peel, digestive biscuits, poached pear and creamy oily texture.
Finish: Toasted oak, baking spices, hint of smoke and orchard fruits.
