The Kilbeggan Distillery is situated on the River Brosna in Kilbeggan, County Westmeath in Ireland. It is one of the oldest known distilleries in the world and first operated in 1757 which certainly makes it Irelands oldest distillery. Kilbeggan has had its ups and downs and closed for many years before reopening in 2014. During the time of closure the whisky ws being produced at the Cooley Distillery in County Louth and was transported to Kilbeggan and stored in a 200 year old granite warehouse. The distillery is named after St Bécán, one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland who founded a monastery in the area in the 6th century.
Nose: Toasted hazelnuts and plenty of malted barley and sweet cereals, a hint of peat can also be detected.
Taste: Honey puff cereal, malty and hints of vanilla and caramel.
Finish: Honey sweetness and dried oak.
